They sit only a few kilometres apart on Bali's south-west coast, yet Seminyak and Canggu attract quite different holidays. Pick the one that matches how you actually want to spend your days and the trip clicks into place; pick the wrong one and you will spend a fortnight commuting to the atmosphere you came for. Here is how we would decide.
The Case for Seminyak
Seminyak is the polished one. It has the highest concentration of good restaurants, the smartest beach clubs and the most walkable core on this stretch of coast. Streets like Jalan Kayu Aya put fine dining, wine bars and boutiques within a short stroll of the sand, and the villas tend toward refined and fully staffed. If you want to watch the sunset with a proper cocktail, eat somewhere excellent every night without a long drive, and stay somewhere that feels grown-up, Seminyak is the natural base — especially for couples, families and groups who value comfort over grit.
The Case for Canggu
Canggu is younger, scruffier and more energetic. It grew up around the surf breaks and the remote-working crowd, so it runs on speciality coffee, brunch cafes, yoga studios and a beach culture built around the waves rather than the day beds. The rice paddies are closer, the vibe is more casual, and prices for food and drink often run a little lower. If you surf, work as you travel, or simply prefer flip-flops to a dress code, Canggu will feel like home. The trade-off is the notorious traffic on its narrow lanes and a beach that is more about the surf than easy swimming.
Getting Between the Two
On the map they look like neighbours, and in light traffic the drive is short. But there is no fast coastal road, and at peak times the journey can stretch well beyond what the distance suggests. That is precisely why choosing a base matters: you do not want to fall in love with Seminyak's restaurants while staying in Canggu, or crave Canggu's surf from a villa in Seminyak, and spend your evenings stuck in a car between them.
How to Decide
Be honest about the holiday you want rather than the one you think you should want. Choose Seminyak for polish, walkable dining and a refined, staffed villa within reach of the beach clubs. Choose Canggu for surf, cafes, a laid-back pace and a lighter budget. There is no wrong answer — only a better fit — and plenty of travellers split the difference, spending most of their nights in one and taking a day trip to sample the other. Match the base to your days, and Bali's south coast rewards you either way.
